Modern cinematography usually offers the audience evil men of not high quality. Most of them are similar, have very banal motivation and do stupid things. And they just aren’t captured.
But Hans Landa, a character from “Inglourious Basterds” by Quentin Tarantino, is their exact opposite.
The First Episode
In the beginning of the movie Landa comes to the milk farm’s owner, Mr LaPadite, who helps a jew family to escape. The nazi knows about it, but doesn’t give any hints and behaves very politely. His behaviour helps to make Mr LaPadite feel free, but every new question leads the farm owner to the dead lock.
His conversation with the farmer’s daughters is also striking. When Hans asks them several questions, he holds their hands on pulse to find out whether they are telling a lie. And LaPadite finally cries and ratts the hiding family out.
The Interrogation of Shosanna in a Restaurant
This interrogation looks like a simple conversation, but it’s only from the first glance. Landa already knows everything about Shosanna. He also knows that the ex-owners of the cinema don’t have a niece, knows that a black projectionist Marcel is working there and knows that Shosanna is the same girl whom he let to run away a few years ago.
He mockingly orders a glass of milk for her and gives some hints which show that he knows about her past. But again he doesn’t accuse her of anything and lets her go.
The Meeting With The “Italians” in The Cinema
Right at first glance at the dressed “Bastards” Landa finds out their real personalities. But he doesn’t show it and just has fun. First he laughs at the version about the broken leg of fraulein von Hammersmark and strikes her with a question about the mountain in Paris.
Then the fake Enzo Gorlomi says a fatal phrase “Buongiorno!”, which means “Good morning!”. The real Italian would say “Buona sera”, so the events took place late in the evening. And the most comic episode happens when Landa asks the fake Antonio Margheriti to introduce himself for Hans to hear his pidgin Italian.
